The Groovy Growits are the Junior Section of The Royal Horticultural Society of Aberdeen.

The Groovy Growits is a club for 8-15 year-olds interested in plants and how to grow them, which was set up jointly by Satrosphere and the RHSA (Royal Horticultural Society of Aberdeen).

Originally, it met in Satrosphere, but last autumn we were offered the use of the Education Room in the Winter Gardens at Duthie Park on Sunday afternoons, 2-3.30 pm, (usually the last Sunday of the month) which seems more convenient for many people. We have, moreover, the opportunity to look at the wide variety of plants growing there, and to arrange activities based on them.

Club members can expect to take part in any or all of the following
Talks and practical activities, including soil testing
Grow bulbs and seeds - take cuttings - grow a bonsai
Plant and help maintain an outdoor plot at Satrosphere
Enter exhibits at shows - maybe win a prize!
Visit gardens and wildlife centres

We ask that members join the RHSA as Junior members, which costs £1.50, and thereafter appreciate a donation of £1 at each meeting, to cover costs.

Christmas Table Decorations with Jean Couper
Everyone made splendid table decorations under the watchful eye of Jean. It never ceases to amaze me that that they all did so well producing almost "professional" table displays. I'm sure all Mums will be delighted with the results. Below are pictures of the GG's hard at work and also the final product.

APRIL 2011

Alan Findlay of the Duthie Park Winter Gardens asked the GG's it they would like to plant a bed of annuals. They were of course were up to the task. Alan took some photos (below) recording some of the action. In a few months the fruits of their labour will be seen and enjoyed by all.

 Candle Decoration 31/10/10

Many candles were decorated today. Glue, flowers, ribbon, leaves and all sorts of things were used in their production. This is practice for an entry in the Spring Show. See the results below.

BBQ 27/6/2010

On a sunny warm June day, an enjoyable BBQ was held in Lesley's garden. Many thanks to all who organised and helped. All the cooks including a new trainee did us proud.

Sowing Annuals 21/3/10

Today the "GGs" were planting annual seeds in pots. I think that everyone managed to plant 12 to 15 pots.
They may be used in August as our secret weapon in the Pallet Garden Competition in the Summer Show!!!

Soil Testing 31/1/10

Today there was a hands on "chemistry" lesson with the acidity/alkalinity of soil being tested.

Christmas Table Decoration 6/12/09

Jean Couper again gave us a delightful demonstration of Festive Floral Art. Then eyes down and concentration. Everyone then produced a spectacular centrepiece that would grace any Christmas Day table. (I’ll bet that not many Mums could do any better).

SHOW 2009

The Groove Growits exhibit had a vegetable theme and received a Commended Award (and a prize of £10.00)
(If any of you have a photo of it, please send it in {} and it will appear below.)

14/8/09 Preparation for the Show

The Groovy Growits are entering a Pallet Garden again in this years show. In preparation the held a "mock up" in Lesley's garage, bringing along plants that they had grown during the year. Although the "Garden" will have a vegetable theme, little has been given away (to our competitors) and all will be revealed on Judging Day.

Insectivorous Plants at the Winter Gardens 2/7/09

Alan Findlay and the Winter gardens staff were setting up a brand new display of insectivorous plants and they asked if the Groovy Growits would like to be involved. We naturally jumped at the chance to help out – what a tremendous opportunity.  They had a bench set up, the plants were there, so we got stuck right in to make a fantastic display.

The results – before and after - can be seen below:-
